You are a group of Network professionals working in Dubai. You have been called by the Dubai Women’s College (DWC) to conduct a training session to a class of Year 2 E-Business students on networks, how they work and to give the class some real-life examples of the structure of networks and the different components that make up a network.
DWC wants you to prepare a presentation of your lesson and conduct your class within four weeks.
|1.||Understand the components that make up a network.|
|2.||Learn and use basic networking tools such as “ping”, “ipconfig”, “tracert” and “nslookup” to understand how IP addressing, Domain Naming System and routing work.|
|3.||This is a “peer teaching” project and it will be done in groups of 2, 3 or 4 students. Your team will be assigned a topic on networking and it will be your job to become an EXPERT on that topic. You will then teach/train the other members of the class and make them experts.|
|4.||Find a company in Dubai, meet with their IT management, interview them regarding your topic and find out how your topic is used in the “real world”. Make sure you know your topic first so you can ask good questions!|
|5.||Create a training presentation on the network component you have been assigned and teach the class.|
|1.||Your instructor will select your groups which will consist of 2, 3 or 4 students per group.|
|2.||Your instructor will assign you to a networking topic. Meet with your group to discuss what you need to do, who and where your resources are.|
|3.||You MUST meet with your instructor to understand the requirements and expectations of the project.|
|4.||Research your topic and understand it like an EXPERT.|
|5.||Find a company in Dubai, meet with their IT management, tour their data center and find out how your topic is used in the “real world”.|
|6.||Prepare the Powerpoint presentation for your lesson. Embed a Visio drawing and at least one screenshot into the PowerPoint presentation|
|7.||Deliver your training. Each session will be between 30-45 minutes long (excluding set up time and breaks) long. Each team member needs to speak for 10 minutes minimum). Each session may NOT exceed 45 minutes.|
This project will be approximately 4 weeks long. By the end of the second week, you will have become an expert in your topic and have started to do your Powerpoints.
By the third week, you will have submitted your presentations and will have practised your presentation as a group.
Presentations will start/end during Week 4.
|1.||Which company in Dubai you have selected, who you will be interviewing and a list of interview questions that you will ask|
|2.||Results of your interview either as a sound file recording, a video or a transcript of your conversation|
|3.||Powerpoint presentation of lesson (Group assessment). Make sure you have embedded a Visio drawing and at least one screenshot into the PowerPoint presentation|
|4.||In-class teaching presentation|
|5.||Minimum one-page (500 words) individual reflection on what you did, what you learned, the role you played during the planning of the lesson and the teaching process.|
|6.||500-word mini report on your research findings with MLA referencing.|
|1.||Tour a datacenter at DWC or at another company and understand the components of a network.|
|2.||Classroom discussions, question and answer|
|3.||Articles on the Web or library|
|4.||http://www.howstuffworks.com (Hint: search for these articles: “What is an IP Address”; “How Internet Infrastucture Works”; “How Routers Work”; “How Firewalls Work”; “How Web Servers Work”; “How Domain Name Servers Work”; “How DSL works”)|
|1.||Learn about the hardware involved in a setting up a network.|
|2.||Learn the main functions of operating systems.|
|3.||Learn about technologies that provide security for a network that is exposed to the Internet.|
|4.||Learn about remote access technologies.|
|5.||Know the advantages of a networked work environment vs. stand alone.|
|6.||Specifically, learn about firewalls, IP addresses, MAC addresses, domain name service (DNS), print servers, fileservers, protocols (ftp, smtp, http, https)|
|7.||Use tools like Traceroute, ipconfig, arp, netstat, getmac|
|8.||Use/learn new software – MS Visio (optional)|
Issues within your teams must be identified and resolved early. Do not come at the end of your project to tell your instructor(s) about problems within teams.
You will be given general guidelines on what you need to do. At this point in your studies, you are expected to find/create specific information based on general guidelines. Do not expect your instructor to provide you the answers. Rather, based on discussions and suggestions, you are expected to get the answers through your own research!!
This project will have the following assessments:
|1.||Powerpoint presentation file. Group assessment. (10%)|
|2.||How you did as a trainer (well rehearsed, knew material, well prepared, spoke for allotted time). Individual/Group assessment. (60%)|
|3.||Interview questions and results of interview – were the questions thorough and were the results of the interview documented as a transcript, sound recording or video? Group assessment based on quality and effort. (20%)|
|4.||500-word mini report with MLA referencing. Group assessment. (10%)|
|5.||Final marks for each student will be a combination of 50% of group and 50% of individual.|
|There will be a quiz at the end which will be a part of your final grades.|
The training and lesson plan portion of the project will be marked in the following manner:
|Training has all of the required elements – training was fun with excellent activities, started on time, kept the attention of every student. Individual students were well prepared and knew their material. It should look like you spent a great deal of time in preparing/delivering your training.|
|Training has all of the required elements but training is weak. Activities are not interesting or well thought out. Trainers cannot demonstrate expertise in their subject matter.|
|Training lacks a few of the required elements but it looks like some effort has been made. Trainers are not well-prepared and cannot demonstrate expertise.
Some deadlines have not been met and group/individual makes excuses for why their work is not better.
|Training lacks a few of the required elements and it looks like little effort has been made. Trainers are not well-prepared and do not show expertise.
Group/Individual makes excuses for why their work is not better.
|Training does not meet criteria or student was absent.|
|1.||This project will require you to use everything you have learned in class, notes, and visit to the DWC server room.|
|2.||It will also require you to work as a team.|
|3.||Each team should select a team leader|
|4.||Each team leader should meet with the other team leaders and discuss information they can share with one another|
|5.||Team leaders will also divide up the work between team members|
|6.||When thinking about presentation ideas, think about “What was” (past), “What is” (present) and “What will be” (future) for your topic.|
The tables below list all the topics available for this project. Use the questions for each topic as a starting point for your research and for questions to ask your chosen company.
